Calgary residents demonstrated pride in their city and their desire to help others when they came out to either take part in the 50th annual Scotiabank Calgary Marathon, or show support to those who did.
The race first took place in 1953, when 19 people gathered on the starting line. Since then, it has grown to include 15,000 participants and raise $1.1 million for 91 different charities.
Runners could do a 5km or 10 km run, or complete the half, full, or ultra marathon.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the race, music from the last 50 years was played and those taking part were invited to dress in their best period costumes. The winners of the costume contest would be awarded a trip to Barbados, Toronto, or Victoria.
It was a great opportunity for city residents to get together and have a fun time. One woman got a wonderful surprise at the end, when her boyfriend gave her a surprise marriage proposal.
The founder and one of the first people to ever take part 50 years ago was on hand to join in the celebration. Several Olympic athletes also participated in this longest-held running race in Canada.
