Victoria Quay in Fremantle, Western Australia, could host a small cultural centre in the future.
The centre, proposed for Pioneer Park, was among suggestions put forward in a precinct plan for the site located across the road from the post office.
The plan, which has been prepared for Fremantle Ports by architects CODA, incorporates an area of 3000 sq m dedicated to retail and office space on Victoria Quay. It also covers the redevelopment of land adjacent to the train station in Fremantle, with the aim of improving the area’s access to the CBD.
Planning for the Quay is a project that has been undertaken by Fremantle Ports together with the public transport authority and Fremantle’s council.
Short-stay accommodation and student housing have been suggested for the opposite end of Pioneer Park, where remains of some of Fremantle’s oldest buildings are still in existence.
According to the architect’s report, the proposals will improve surveillance and effectively stimulate activity in Pioneer Park.
Alternatives to building on the land could include the establishment of a playground or small skate park.
Time has run out for the public to contribute to the plan, so flyer printing to distribute details to residents has not been undertaken. The project is now in the hands of the Western Australian Planning Commission.
