The Darebin Music Feast for 2012 is currently celebrating the culture of the inner north of Melbourne. It got underway yesterday and runs up until October 7.
The feast will consist of over 150 performances. Over 50 of the performances will be free, and will be held in venues in Thornbury, Northcote, Preston, Reservoir, Bundoora and Fairfield.
The Music Feast began in 1996, and has developed into one of the state’s most popular festivals. Some of the events include the Darebin Feast Songwriters’ Award semi-finals and finals, Melbourne soul group The Deans, rockabilly artist Adrian Whyte, and the Spectrum Choir which consists of Filipino, Vietnamese, Chinese, Chaldean, and Assyrian singers from within the local community.
For beginners who want some experience in playing music, there will be free jam sessions. All instruments are welcome at the jam sessions but advanced players are asked to give this one a miss and leave it to the beginners. There will also be a one-day management workshop for musicians who are managing themselves.
The programme also features the Decibels Records scheme, which gives young people practical experience in the music industry. Another highlight of the festival will be The Animated Museum of Experimental Stupidity, which is a mix of live music, comic events, film, and spoken word.
Poster printing will be done to help to publicise the Music Feast, which is an environmentally committed community celebration.
