Printing software leader Quark announced a free upgrade of its current XPress software which will allow publishers to add multimedia elements. The upgrade, version 9.2, provides multimedia and interactive options for ebook publishing as well as improvements for the publication of iPad apps.
The update provides more tools for designers wanting to export layouts to electronic devices. New options include adding audio or video content to ePUB Books, embedding hyperlinks within ebooks and controlling picture formatting across publications. Quark's App Studio, which was added to version 9 to tap into the iPad development fad, has also been improved, with multimedia options added and better conformity to Apple's guidelines.
Quark's addition of multimedia elements is in line with advances within the printing industry in general. Advances in technology have meant that many publishers have had to reassess what the word 'Print' now means. Even traditional printing companies are edging ever further into digital printing options, with most now offering at least digital Business Cards on top of their regular services.
The advance may be more good news for the Australian publishing industry, providing more options for electronic publishing, which has come as a boon in many ways to a geographically isolated industry.
