University of Melbourne best in Australia

The University of Melbourne has recently been ranked as the 37th top university in the world by the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking agency. It is one of two Australian universities in the top 40; the Australian National University in Canberra was ranked 38th. According to Professor Glyn Davis, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne this ranking has:

“reaffirmed the university’s direction in taking on the best of world standards in curricula and research.”

The University of Melbourne has eight campuses in Victoria, including one in Hawthorn which houses the central administration for the university. All of the universities were judged on the criteria of teaching, research, citation, industry income and international outlook; teaching, research and citation made up 90% of the score. The university also ranked high on other lists such as the Shanghai Jiao Tong and the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan. Graduates and staff at the university can take pride in this accomplishment; mentioning it on your next business card printing run can only help to impress potential customers or employers.

The ranking of universities might seem needless and unimportant, but such rankings can contribute to a sense of pride in community. They also ensure that those who teach at universities and those who facilitate the operation of those universities are trying their best. It is important that our universities offer the latest in research and that they can offer their students the best possible education available. After all, our future relies on a well-educated and accomplished population to solve the problems that are sure to turn up.
