Hawthorn music fans to hear London sounds

A British band created by an East London icon and his friend will now play a concert in Melbourne.

Music lovers from Hawthorn and other suburbs will soon have a chance to hear the virtual band Gorillaz as they take to the stage at the John Cain Arena later on this year. The creation of London-based comic book artist Jamie Hewlett and Leytonstone-born Blur frontman Damon Albarn, Gorillaz came into being in 1998.

Described as being like brothers, the two creatives developed the virtual group with comic book characters representing the musical players. While different musicians and singers have featured in the group over the years, Albarn has been part of every line up.

Gorillaz’s debut album was self-titled and released in 2001, enjoying critical success. The studio recording achieved double-platinum status in Europe and triple-platinum in Britain. Major record labels often look to professional printing services to set typography and images for album releases.

The Gorillaz are perhaps best known for their smash hit “Clint Eastwood”. The single got its titled from the music being reminiscent of the Eastwood spaghetti western “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”.

The Gorillaz are set to perform at the John Cain Arena, situated on Olympic Blvd in Melbourne, on Sunday, 24th July. The show will kick off at 6.45 pm.
