A Year of Reading draws to a close in Hawthorn

Reading enthusiasts should make the most of two activities in Hawthorn next week, as the National Year of Reading comes to a close.

On Tuesday, November 27, journalist, broadcaster and author Ramona Koval will speak at the Hawthorn Community Precinct Meeting Rooms in Glenferrie Road.

She will talk about her latest work, ‘By the Book’, which is fresh from the printing company and covers life and reading. It tells the stories of some of the writers that have become part of her life from Oscar Wilde to Christina Stead and touches on subjects as diverse as love, travel, and science. The talk begins at 7.30 pm.

On Thursday, November 29, Lesley Harding and Kendrah Morgan, curators at the Heide Museum of Modern Art will discuss their book, ‘Sunday’s Garden’, which explores the history of the garden at Heide.

The book features many previously unpublished photographs of the area during its development by Sunday and John Reed, its founders, who transformed it from a run-down former dairy farm to parkland with native and exotic flora and a kitchen garden.

The book also includes anecdotes about the garden and some of the artists, such as Sidney Nolan, who helped to plant the garden and took inspiration from it. It also features extensive plant lists and more recent pictures of the gardens throughout the seasons.

This talk will also take place at the Hawthorn Community Precinct Meeting Rooms and starts at 2.30 pm.

Both talks are free, but bookings are essential. For more information, visit the Boroondara Libraries website.
