New smoking ban to be enforced in Epping

Children in Epping and around the City of Whittlesea will be able to play in fresh air with the introduction of a new smoking ban.

The city is implementing new laws brought in by the government in Victoria, which further limit the locations where smoking cigarettes and cigars is allowed in public and restrict smoking in areas where young people gather.

Under the new law, smoking is banned within 10-metres of any skate park or outdoor playground used by the public. It is also banned in outdoor areas at public swimming pools and at sports venues hosting events for under-18s.

Anyone flouting the ban can be warned by council local laws officers or fined on the spot.
Printing services have been used to inform people of the new law, including Posters and Brochures. Whittlesea City Council will also erect Signs at local skate parks and playgrounds.

The city’s mayor, Councillor Mary Lalios, said the ban would make using public recreational areas a better experience for residents. She said:

“We are supportive of this move to protect the health of our young people and reduce smoking rates. An educative approach is what’s required as people adjust to the new laws. However, people who are found to be wilfully flouting the law can expect to be fined.”

The ban came into force at the beginning of April.
