Move to keep local shops tenanted

A City Council-run programme has been launched to help bring together vacant shops and their ideal business outlet in local shopping strips in Epping and across Whittlesea.

Lalor’s Rochdale Square is the first location to be targeted by the Vacant to Vibrant campaign, which seeks to fill a number of empty shops with appropriate businesses. One property owner in the Square said that their shop, which was suitable for use as a specialist or allied health consulting rooms, had sat vacant for quite some time as finding a tenant had proven difficult.

According to the proprietor, situations where a specific area is experiencing multiple vacancies can lead to reduced foot traffic throughout a shopping strip or centre, which ultimately causes hardship for those businesses remaining.

In supporting Council’s new programme, he said for the good of residents, traders and property owners, it was a great idea to work together. The appearance of new Logo Design on a shopfront heralding a new tenant has often helped maintain the vibrancy of a retail centre.

Partnerships, Planning and Engagement Director, Julian Edwards would like to hear from prospective businesses and property owners who have vacant retail shops. In an effort to ensure residents are able to keep on shopping locally, Edwards said it is also important to establish the right mix of outlets.
