Yarra Plenty Regional Library is organising Local History Month in October, and libraries near Epping will be taking part.
Visitors to the library will have the opportunity to browse the exhibition and discover the history of the state and their region.
The program is aligned this year with the History Week being presented by the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Hundreds of events are on offer during the week throughout the state of Victoria. Visitors will be able to learn about a variety of historical events and people as they visit the graves of famous historical figures as well as some infamous ones at Coburg Cemetery. Stories of so-called “wild colonial boys” and bushrangers, such as the St Kilda Gang and Ned Kelly, will be represented, as will those of local gold miners.
Visitors will be able to tour the estate of one of the founders of the state, Charles La Trobe. The history and culture of the first inhabitants of Victoria, the Aboriginal people, will be exhibited with presentations by indigenous community members. Postcards, Flyers and Brochures are likely to be available.
Local History Month runs for the whole of October at Lalor, Mill Park, Thomastown and Whittlesea Libraries, and entry is free. History Week will be held from Sunday, October 16 to Sunday, October 23.
