Grants aid community-based initiatives

Women’s practical hands-on workshops, connecting isolated individuals and sustainable gardening are among initiatives to gain from the latest round of Community Development Grants.

A total of 18 community groups from Epping and throughout the City of Whittlesea were awarded grants coming in at over $76,000 as part of the 2017/18 Round One programme.

The Community Development Grants Programme, according to Mayor Ricky Kirkham, provides financial assistance for organisations and community groups that build skills and prompt people to engage more with the community. He said:

“It’s always really tough selecting which projects will receive grant funding, as we receive so many great applications from across the City of Whittlesea.

“The programme aims to provide more opportunities for people to get out and about, meet new people or learn new skills. Many projects also celebrate our diversity and help bring people together."

First Round funding recipients ranged from a men’s health programme aimed at tackling mental health, encouraging regular exercise and preventing disease to a festival that celebrates the Punjabi culture.

Funds can be used for everything from boosting facilities to increasing awareness through marketing services provided by Print shops.

The grant funding in 2017 was divided into a pair of rounds, with applications still being received for Round Two, which opened on August 21.

Successful recipients in the latest round will be advised in December this year.

A combined total of $140,000 will be awarded between both rounds.
