Epping prepares for Australia Day celebrations

Epping residents are being urged to help celebrate Australia this Friday.

An exciting programme of events has been arranged for locals to enjoy at this year’s City of Whittlesea Australia Day celebrations on January 26.

The local festivities are set to incorporate everything from a traditional Aussie barbecue to art-making, live music and a spectacular fireworks display.

The free event, organised by Whittlesea Council, will not only be filled with music and entertainment, but will also provide an opportunity for the community to applaud the work of some of the communities most outstanding residents during the announcement of the City of Whittlesea Australia Day Award recipients.

According to a Council spokesman, the awards recognise the many achievements of some dedicated community members.

He said nominations received were of a high calibre in all categories which included Community Group of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Access and Inclusion Citizen of the Year, and Citizen of the Year.

Those attending the celebrations will be able to bring their own picnic or indulge in a barbecued sausage or bite to eat from one of the available food trucks.

Free treats from the barbecue will be cooked up by the Whittlesea Lions Club and the Thomastown Men’s Shed, while entertainment will be provided by That Gold Street Sound and the Garni Garni Devils.

The event, the likes of which are often advertised locally via flyer printing, will end with a stunning bang as the fireworks light up the sky.
