Celebrating Merri Creeks transformation

The Friends of Merri Creek community action group will form the focus of next month's World Environment Day activities at Pacific Epping Shopping Centre.

Established in 1972, World Environment Day is celebrated annually to raise worldwide awareness and take action to protect the environment.

The event will launch the exhibition Merri Creek: from wastelands to parklands, which showcases 40 of community work rehabilitant the creek. It is a travelling exhibition moving from Epping to Thomastown, Lalor, Mill Park and Whittlesea Community Activity Centre over the next few months.

Friends of Merri Creek was established in 1988 with the goal to restore and protect the local waterway. The creek itself is almost 70km, beginning near Heathcote Junction and ending at Dight's Fall, where it joins the Yarra River. Since then, they have organised activities such as planting up the creek banks and controlling weeds, water quality testing, tours and walks, bird surveys, community education, and planning projects.

Already this year, the active group has been awarded a total of $43,809.60 in grant money. This includes the Community Volunteer Action Grant to improve habitat for critically endangered plants, and the Melbourne Water Community Grant to control weeds and revegetate, and display materials for community events. The community group may use the services of a printing company to produce Flyers and newsletters.

Other family-friendly activities will include face painting and a petting zoo. The event, which takes place June 5, is free and everyone is welcome.
