Autumnal event coming to Epping in Spring
The Mooncake - Mid-Autumn Festival, held annually in China on the 15th day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar’s eighth month, will also be celebrated by Chinese residents in Epping in September.
The event is also referred to as the Moon Festival as it falls at the time of a full moon. Appreciating the moon plays an important part in the festival, which traces its history to the Tang Dynasty of the 7th to 10th Centuries AD. Originally with harvest thanksgiving as its focus, it is now more centred on family reunion.
The program is being presented by the Whittlesea Chinese Association and will include culturally inspired song and dance performances. There are many Chinese traditions and legends associated with this festival, and these will be woven into the program in the form of demonstrations of how to make a mooncake and a traditional lantern parade for the children. Awards will be presented for the best lanterns.
Mooncakes, which were originally sacrificed to the Moon God, are an essential part of the festival and are now customarily presented by the Chinese as presents for relatives and friends. Banner printing and poster printing will likely be used for the event.
The festival will be held on Saturday, September 10 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at the Epping Memorial Hall.
