Dandenong young people to learn cooking skills

Youngsters aged 16 to 25 in the Dandenong area may well be interested in combining cooking skills with a volunteering element.

At the Foodie Futures event, those attending will shop for ingredients during a Dandenong market Tour, then use those ingredients in order to prepare a nutritious meal from scratch. This will earn them a nationally accredited food handling certificate and give them confidence to make connections with voluntary organisations. The skills learnt and hands-on experience will also provide a great foundation for future employment opportunities; those attending the course should have an interest in cooking with an emphasis on healthy eating.

The IMPACT program is designed by Greater Dandenong City Council’s Youth Services team. It is carefully designed to introduce young people to community volunteering by providing useful skills and building confidence. Volunteering is recognised by employers as a useful skill as it showcases motivation, social responsibility and development of skills.

Events that teach practical skills will often make use of local printing services in order to produce handy information sheets as a useful takeaway and aide-memoire for attendees.

The IMPACT Volunteering – Foodie Futures is happening on Thursday 2nd October, from 10am until 2.30pm, and on Friday 3rd October, from 10am until 4.30pm, at Youth Services, 39 Clow Street, Dandenong. The cost for the two-day event is $20.
