Ancient Japanese art to be taught in Dandenong
Keen artists and those wishing to learn a new skill in the Dandenong area can sign up for a free workshop that teaches participants the very old art of Kintsugi.
Kintsugi is also known as golden joinery or golden repair, and refers to the art of mending broken pottery by using lacquer mixed with platinum, gold or silver powder, thus creating an object that shows its history, rather than disguising imperfections. It highlights the beauty in broken objects, focusing on embracing imperfections.
At the workshop, attendees will learn the history of the practice and then have the opportunity to mend ceramic objects that they have brought in, either already in a broken state or items that can be carefully broken in class. Materials such as epoxy glue and urushi lacquer will be used, and everyone then gets to take away the mended items with a new lease of life, while highlighting the beauty in the flaws.
There will also be books that can be borrowed from the library as extra reading material. Flyer printing to advertise local events like this is often undertaken by local print shops.
The Kintsugi Workshop – Libraries After Dark, is taking place at Dandenong Library, 225 Lonsdale Street, Dandenong on Thursday 4th September, from 6.30pm until 8pm. The event is free, but it is necessary to register for a place.
