New car park could double as multi-purpose community facility

A new multi-level car park in Croydon is set to provide 400 additional parking bays within the locality.

Close to public transport in Devon Street, the car park will significantly increase the capacity of the nearby park and ride facility to encourage the community to use public transport. There will be pedestrian access to the Main Street shopping precinct, town square and Croydon community precinct.

The Victorian government will contribute $18 million to the project, the funds coming from an estimated $68 million contribution by the state government towards 2093 new parking spots throughout the state. This comes from the $500 million commuter car park fund promised by the federal government. Other areas in the state flagged for the parking upgrades are Bentleigh, Ferntree Gully, Hampton, Mitcham and Ringwood stations.

The community would like to investigate the possibility of broadening the functionality of the car park by considering community events, such as markets, exhibitions, movie screenings and sports training events.

Community events can be an advantageous opportunity for local businesses to promote their services. Items such as Notepads or promotional Pens for daily commuters can serve as great promotional tools when used by those who indulge in crosswords, for example, on their daily rides in and out of the city.

Construction of the car park is due for completion by October 2021.
