Croydon crafters can soon enjoy a session where they can make a bowl with the wet-felt method, which can then be taken home and enjoyed as an ornamental piece.
Melbourne-based British artist Olivia Giretto will be teaching the wet-felting technique so that attendees can construct a small, decorative bowl.
Wet-felting is an activity whereby warm, soapy water is applied to woollen fibres so that the tiny barbs on the wool interlock during the process of rolling, agitating and rubbing the damp fabric. The fabric is then be rinsed and air-dried.
While drying, the wool fabric gets smaller and thicker and can then be used as part of various projects, such as fashioning the fabric into a bowl, making a sleeve for a bar of soap, creating seasonal decorations such as garlands or making flat, felt pictures. With skill, it is possible to use different colours and textures of wool to create patterns and embellishments during the process of felting.
Artists that run workshops might use the facilities of local printing services to create eye-catching Posters to advertise events.
