This year, residents of Croydon and the surrounding areas can attend a session that aims to save people money going forward.
Veronica Kennedy is the founder of A Hand to Help, which was borne out of a desire to help busy people reclaim their home lives by organising their home spaces in a convivial, non-threatening and constructive way.
At the New Year, New Habits session, Kennedy will be speaking about her year of buying nothing new, which she undertook in 2025. She will share her top tricks and tips and show how it is possible to live without buying new, as well as touching on clearing spaces and reducing waste.
Kennedy spent 2025 carefully considering all purchases, although medication, food and underwear were exempt from the challenge. Using a stripped-back mentality, Kennedy made use of ops shops, Facebook Marketplace and other local groups that support similar challenges. She often found that just by requesting an item, someone already had one that they were prepared to lend or donate, which is also a great community-building exercise.
Local businesses often use Business Cards, distributed at events as a means of advertising.
New Year, New Habits: Veronica’s Guide to Buying Nothing New is taking place on Saturday 7th February, from 10.30am until midday. The venue is Croydon Library, 5 Civic Square, Croydon 3136. The event is free to attend, but it is necessary to register for a place.
