Maroondah Council partnership launches knitting initiative

Maroondah City Council is encouraging residents of Croydon and surrounding suburbs to get involved and spread the warmth during the winter through a new knitting initiative.

Knit one, warm one is a joint project between the council and local community houses to help families and individuals who have been economically impacted due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Department of Health and Human Services statistics for the 2019-2020 financial year reveal that nearly 18,000 people sought assistance for crisis services or homelessness in Melbourne’s east. Graphic design is often used by organisations to collate statistics and information.

Councillor Nora Lamont believes this initiative is the perfect opportunity for knitters of all abilities to combine kindness with their creative passion as they knit scarves, mittens, beanies and socks. She also believes that numerous families are finding it hard to heat their homes due to job losses around the pandemic. The initiative hopes to collect as many knitted items as possible to distribute across the wider Maroondah area.

Members of Yarrunga Retirees Group and residents of Cherrytree Retirement Village have jumped on board and already donated numerous handmade items to be gifted. These items will be distributed by Wellways, a reputable non-profit organisation, to families who have the greatest need.

The council hopes to encourage residents to use their quarantine restrictions productively by contributing to the initiative. To donate knitted items, residents are required to call the council to arrange a collection time. Further information can be found on the Maroondah council website.
