Maroondah City addresses environmental issues through art

Residents in Croydon and surrounding suburbs have an opportunity to discover some unique art works when they undertake a leisurely walk between Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery and Artspace at Realm.

The walk, known as the Anthropocene Art Trail, focuses on man’s impact on the environment and hopes to make residents aware of climate change, sustainability and the need to care for the environment.

The commissioned artworks utilise signal Boxes in the area as canvases and each work uniquely covers the theme in the way the artist interprets it.

Unleashing Hell is the digital Print by Neville Cichon and tells the story of man’s reliance on electricity. This work was inspired by a quote from an environmentalist regarding climate change impacting our habitat and increasing the risk of bushfires.

Another work, Icy Cold World, by Mark Bernard, depicts how animals in the Arctic may be impacted by climate change and how man has encroached on their habitat.

Carla Gottgens has created a work called The Curiosity Cabinet, which depicts artefacts from the past and will probably be extinct within the next 50 years.

The Trail contains three more artworks and is a great opportunity for residents to get out for some exercise and enjoy a cultural activity that stimulates discussion. Organisations make use of brochure printing to advertise local attractions to the community.

Further information regarding the artworks and a map of the trail is available on the Maroondah City Council website.
