Injection of funds to upgrade non-government schools

Work to upgrade and construct new facilities at independent and Catholic schools in Croydon and across Victoria will be made possible following a major commitment of funds by the state government over the next five years.

A total of 28 projects have been earmarked for $73 million in funding in the first round, according to Premier Daniel Andrews and Education Minister James Merlino.

The Premier said the state’s rapid growth will see an expected 115,000 more students enter Victoria’s education system by 2025 with non-government schools catering for almost 33% of students, adding:

“We’re delivering record funding for new and upgraded schools, both Government and independent – so our kids get the best facilities, no matter where they live.”

He said funding is vital to ensure no child misses out on receiving a good education. A total of $402 million is set to be distributed during the next four years, with funds enabling some schools to upgrade facilities or boost capacity while others will construct brand new buildings. The funds may also be used for the removal of cladding or asbestos from schools.

Parents and community members are often advised of major works such as these via flyer printing campaigns.

In total, the government’s commitment to education infrastructure in its 2019/2020 budget has reached $1.82 million and, according to the Premier, will effectively assist the education sector to cater for current and ongoing demand.
