Leigh Gesthuizen from Croydon Hills has opted to go on a motorcycle trip to boost knowledge of the threat posed by prostate cancer.
Mr. Gesthuizen, a father with two children, has had personal experience of the way prostate cancer can impact on family life. His father has become terminally ill after being diagnosed with the condition, and his father-in-law has had to undergo surgery. Both men were initially reluctant to talk about their deteriorating health with family members.
Gesthuizen wants to stop people from being embarrassed about their health. As a result, he has taken on the challenge of travelling to the Margaret River from Melbourne. He told the Herald Sun:
“Every day I learn more about this type of cancer and apart from the physical changes I have seen with my father, I see, feel and hear the impact of: treatments, questions, lack of answers, confusion, combined with the emotions of denial, acceptance and where to from here.”
Gesthuizen has said how his father has appreciated his decision to go on the 4,000 km ride. His wife registered him on the trip because of her appreciation of the problem.
Gesthuizen has the aspiration of raising $10,000. He believes that males over the age of 50 should attend regular medical checks to remain well – a point regularly driven home through informative Flyers and Brochures created by health professionals.Get a Free Quote for Flyers Get a Free Quote for Brochures
