Children's favourites translated for locals

Burmese families in Croydon now have the chance to read with their children in their own language.

Maroondah is home to the second largest population of Burmese refugees in Victoria, and Croydon has one of the largest Burmese communities in the city, with around 300 of the more than 900 families in the city living in the suburb.

Printing services have been used to create Copies of several popular Books in Burmese for families to share. The Books include several from the ‘Whose Books?’ series by award-winning Australian author Jeanette Rowe, which have previously been translated by the Yarra Ranges Council.

Maroondah Mayor Councillor Natalie Thomas said the Books created more opportunity for Burmese parents to read to their children. She said:

“Reading with children is such an important way parents can not only connect with their children, but it also has huge impact on their reading and speech development. The translated Books will help to break down the language barriers that many Burmese parents have, and provide a strong connection back to their own heritage and culture”.

The Books will be available at Croydon Library for any family from across Maroondah to borrow. Another set has been donated to Croydon Central Kindergarten as the early childhood facility caters to many of the Burmese residents.

The Books were officially donated at a special storytime held earlier this month.
