Work on new rugby league hub begins

Work is underway at Broadmeadows' Seabrook Reserve to transform the site into an important local hub for rugby league.

The start of the $16.9 million project recently kicked off with the turning of the first sod on the new and innovative State Rugby League and Community Centre, which was attended by Hume City Mayor Joseph Haweil, Community Sport Minister Ros Spence and Broadmeadows Member Frank McGuire, together with Melbourne Storm, NRL and the locally based Northern Thunder.

Set to be the base for Touch Football Victoria and NRL Victoria, as well as the home club of Northern Thunder, the new facility is set to support the rising interest in touch football and rugby league in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, according to Mayor Haweil, who added:

“Our young talent will now have a facility to enjoy the sport they love and grow their skills locally before some have the opportunity to continue playing at the highest levels in their sport in the country.”

The mayor said the new facility will be fully accessible and will allow players to participate in their favourite sports and lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Activities at local sporting clubs are often widely advertised via local flyer printing campaigns.

The facility will also become a training venue for Melbourne Storm and a place to participate in community programmes, providing many young fans with an opportunity to see their favourite players in person.
