Special exhibit and expo to mark Refugee Week in Hume
A free exhibition and expo will be held in Broadmeadows, Victoria as part of this year’s National Refugee Week.
The Refugee Expo to be held at the Home Global Learning Centre will feature stories by Hume City residents who had sought asylum from war-ravaged countries.
The event, according to Mayor Geoff Porter, will provide a chance to meet asylum seekers, refugees and families.
Hume City, he said, has recorded one of the State’s highest refugee settlement rates and is among Australia’s first councils to join the Welcoming Cities network. He explained:
In addition to the Refugee Expo, to be held on June 20, National Refugee Week (June 17 to 23) will also include the launch of an oral history project entitled `They Cannot Take the Sky – Stories from Detention’ put together by Behind the Wire.
Featured on Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery brochure printing to run until August 5, the award-winning exhibition has been described by Cr Porter as “extraordinary, devastating and inspiring”.
Free tickets to the exhibition and the special launch event on June 19 at 6:00 pm, as well as further information on Hume City Council’s Refugee Expo, can be obtained by visiting council’s website.

“Council’s Refugee Expo and National Refugee Week is an important opportunity to reflect on this, as well as understand the many different and at times difficult paths our residents took to make Hume home.”
