What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Presenting a folio at a job interview

Tim Lapetino and Jason Adam are partners in Hexanine and are the authors of the upcoming book, Damn Good: Top Designers Discuss Their All-Time Favourite Projects. They have some advice about the work you present as part of your folio at a job interview.

It is important to research your prospective employer so that you can angle your work towards the organisation and what they do. A design company in Broadmeadows will have a different aesthetic and client base to company based in Prahran. Lapetino says:

“Be prepared and find out what the interviewer wants ahead of time and show those pieces.”

When presenting your folio, tell your stories and illuminate the thinking behind each image. Illustrate to the interviewer how you have solved design problems during the process of creating your designs.

When presenting your folio, don’t overwhelm the interviewer with too many pieces. Quality is the name of the design game, not quantity. It is admirable to be prolific but every piece can’t be a masterpiece. Adam says:

“Think of your portfolio presentation as a story- it should have a strong beginning, middle and ending.”

Tim Lapetino suggests that you,

“Leave your mark and something to remind you by.”

A business card will help connect you, to the work you have presented at the interview. Approach your business card printing as an important design brief and let your personality shine through and hopefully that will be the card that will be used to call the person who has secured the job.
