New reading scheme set to take off
Families with pre-school aged children in Broadmeadows and around Hume City are being invited to take part in a new reading programme being launched this month.
The 1,000 Books Before School scheme is designed to encourage parents to
read with their children before they start their time in the classroom.
Printing services have been used to create colourful records to help families keep track of their reading and children will receive stickers for every 100 books they track as well as rewards when they reach certain milestones such as reading 100 books, 250 books and 500 books.
Hume Mayor Councillor Adem Atmaca said reading had great benefits in developing language and imagination for pre-school children, and the challenge was within the reach of most families. Picture books for young children only took about five minutes to read, he said, meaning if families spent just 15 minutes a day reading they would be able to reach the 1,000 book target in a year.
The scheme will be launched at The Age library in Broadmeadows on Tuesday August 25th at 11:00 am.
The event will include a talk by author and illustrator Jeanette Rowe who has written several popular picture books for children and has won a number of awards for her work.
Anyone wishing to attend the launch needs to book a place through Hume City Council.
