What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Initiative puts focus on creative arts in schools

Schools from Broadmeadows to Birregurra, North Melbourne to Numurkah, Point Cook to Paynesville and Altona to Apollo Bay are set to benefit from a new initiative by Working for Victoria, which is providing opportunities for skilled members of the creative industries to train students.

Employment Minister Jaala Pulford said that a school at Brunswick North, near Broadmeadows, is already learning circus skills from specialist artists in the field such as Erick Mitsak, Johanna Fairley and Tara Gooding. She said the artists, who were among the initial 37 Victorian artists to participate in the project, are using their performance skills, costumes, wearable art, dance and music to create a multi-disciplinary, multi-layered parade. She added:

“We’re giving kids the opportunity to learn from some of our state’s best artists, designers, musicians, filmmakers and writers – and helping creatives to get back to work.”

A total of 150 artists will be employed on a full-time six-month contract as part of the initiative, which is known as the Creative Workers in Schools programme. The breadth of talent is widespread, and it ranges from visual artists, theatre makers, sculptors and puppeteers to poets, podcasters, musicians, filmmakers, fashion designers and more.

Printing services are often employed to ensure creative art students have access to helpful information for each of the subjects covered.

Regional Arts Victoria is delivering the programme, which represents a partnership between Creative Victoria, the Training and Education Department and Working for Victoria.
