People in Hume and the surrounding areas can raise money for cancer research this month, while also celebrating the lives of friends and family who may have been lost to the disease.
The Cancer Society Relay for Life is a two-day event during which teams of participants keep a baton moving around a relay course throughout the day and night. This year’s relay will take place on Friday March 15th and Saturday March 16th at The Meadows in Northcorp Boulevard, Broadmeadows.
There is still time to register a team for the event, at a cost of $20 per person. Those without a team are also able to find another team to join. Participants are asked to raise money as part of their group. Flyer printing and poster printing are great ways to publicise fundraising efforts.
The first part of the relay will be a special lap to honour those who have either survived cancer or who are having treatment, and to remember those who have lost their lives to the condition in the past. Anyone who has had cancer, their supporters and anyone who would like to remember a loved one can take part in this first lap, even if they are not joining in with the rest of the event.
A candlelit ceremony is also held as dusk falls and for a small donation, candles can be lit to remember a special person.
Relay for Life welcomes participants of any fitness level and there are no restrictions on fundraising, with even small amounts being accepted.
