Hume City Council is inviting feedback from the community on the development of its new Arts and Culture Strategy.
The strategy is designed to strengthen existing cultural assets and to encourage the development of future opportunities.
Key aims of the strategy, outlined in the Discussion Paper, include fostering the creativity of established and emerging local artists, providing infrastructure appropriate for creative use, and building participation in cultural activities for Hume’s diverse community.
Hume City Council is seeking feedback to identify which areas of the arts and culture sector are most important to members of the community.
Hume City is considered one of Australia’s fastest growing and most culturally diverse communities, spanning 504 square kilometres and encompassing such suburbs as Broadmeadows, Tullamarine, Craigieburn and Sunbury. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Census of Public Housing, the area is home to residents from 156 different countries.
With such a diverse population, the council aims to ensure that different cultures are represented in its arts and culture development. Some of the outlets of creative industry identified as an area of discussion include museums, galleries and libraries. Exhibitions at these venues are often promoted using poster printing services, which themselves have their own artistic merit.
Residents can have their say via email, written submission, an online survey or by attending a series of community workshops held in Sunbury, Craigieburn and Broadmeadows.
