What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Help sought to record history of local landmark

Broadmeadows residents are being asked to help compile a history of one of the area’s historical landmarks.

The Hume City Council is looking for stories about the Maygar Army barracks located in Camp Road in Broadmeadows, in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the site in August.

The barracks were obtained by the Army in 1914, when the 6th Light Horse Regiment was formed in Broadmeadows.

The unit later became the 8th Light Horse Regiment, which sailed from Melbourne in September 1914 and arrived in Egypt in 1915. It became part of the ANZAC Division and suffered heavy defeats during the attack on the Nek in August 1915, as part of the Gallipoli Campaign.

The regiment remained in Turkey and Egypt, taking part in various offensives until they sailed for home in July 1919. Today, the barracks house the 4th Combat Services Support Battalion, which provides support staff for the Australian Defence Force.

The ANZAC spirit has played a large part in the development of modern Australia, and many families have mementos from ancestors who served in first and second world wars. As time goes on, professional print companies can help families store those memories for future generations, by creating high quality copies of photographs and reproductions of old documents.

Stories and photographs about the Camp Road Barracks can be sent to the council by emailing history@hume.vic.gov.au
