What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Diversity the key at Broadmeadows Fiesta

Global culture will be celebrated in Broadmeadows this weekend with the 2012 Broadmeadows Fiesta.

Celebrating the range of cultures within the local community, the fiesta includes entertainment, food and market stalls, workshops and a billy-cart derby.

Anyone who would like some exercise to start their day can join the White Ribbon Fun Run and Walk, which takes a five-kilometre route from Jacana Reserve and starts at 9:30 am. All entry fees raise funds for the White Ribbon Foundation, which works to stop violence against women, and Broadmeadows AusKick, which helps introduce children to Australian Rules Football.

Later in the morning, a billy-cart derby will add the thrill of speed with a race around the streets. Two-person teams must register for entry in advance and the billy-carts should be decorated to represent a country. Competitors and supporters make take into account that banner printing is a good way to stand out from the crowd.

The fiesta itself will feature performances from a number of local groups, including African drumming and Turkish dancing. Workshops on Bollywood dancing, Middle Eastern music, African drumming, and belly dancing will be held during the day.

Children will be entertained by face painters, a bouncy castle, bilingual story times and craft activities, while keen historians will be able to look at photographs and memorabilia to see how Broadmeadows has changed over the years.

The fiesta will be held this Sunday, November 18, from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Civic Plaza, which is on Pascoe Vale Road.
