For those living in and around Broadmeadows, there is a chance to learn about Ebru, which is the Turkish art of paper marbling.
Oznur Ates is a skilful practitioner of Ebru, which is the art of adding coloured paints onto an Ebru shallow bath, containing water thickened with an additive.
The design is then transferred to paper by laying it carefully on top of the paint, to create a unique image. This art form dates from the 16th century and is relatively easy to try, but can take many years to become proficient. Traditional Ebru images include flowers, stars and animals.
At the Mesmerising Moments exhibition, Oznur Ates uses traditional techniques to produce contemporary, stylised flowers, harnessing the ancient language of flowers to express thoughts and feelings in a unique manner.
The exhibition showcases the magical, therapeutic art of Ebru and also includes a video installation, which was made for the 2023 Hume Winter Lights Festival.
Instructions for visitors about the ancient art of Ebru may be made available by local printing services so that the technique can be practised at home.
The Mesmerising Moments – Oznur Ates exhibition is taking place daily from Thursday, 12 December at 9 am, until Sunday, 9 March at 5 pm. The venue will be the Town Hall, Broadmeadows Gallery, Broadmeadows. The exhibition is free to view.
