What's Happening in Broadmeadows, VIC…

Communities urged to apply for Mens Shed grants

Broadmeadows residents are being urged to apply for a grant to construct a men’s shed to help support the social and emotional health of the area’s men.

The Victorian Government initiative is this year offering $885,000 to assist in establishing men’s sheds, with a focus on regional areas and Aboriginal men.

The benefits of Men’s Sheds within the community are many, according to Minister for Families and Children Jenny Mikakos. She said they offer productive and safe spaces where men can work on projects together, form friendships and contribute to the community.

The state of Victoria already hosts 360 of the 1,000 Men’s Sheds operating around the country, with an estimated 15,000 men statewide taking part.

Mikakos said:
“Men’s sheds are a wonderful part of the Victorian landscape – and we’re building and upgrading more of them so more Victorians can benefit.

“It’s about giving men a chance to come together, give back to the community and talk or learn about what matters to them.”

Flyer printing and media coverage has kept many local communities aware of the important role members of Men’s Sheds have played in helping those in need.

This year’s grants include $60,000 towards the construction of new sheds and up to $30,000 to refurbish or upgrade existing ones.

Last year, the grants contributed to the refurbishment of 10 Men’s sheds and the establishment of 13.

Grant applications are open until June 8, 2018.
