Charging ahead with electric bus trial
Donric bus operators, which provide services across Melbourne, including Broadmeadows, is among six state operators set to take part in a trial of electric buses being conducted by the Victorian Government.
Three electric, zero-emission buses (ZEB) will be introduced to their fleet for routes running in and near Sunbury. They will represent Victoria's first buses using batteries of solid-state Lithium Metal Polymer, rather than the lithium-ion batteries more commonly used in most electric vehicles.
The three-year trial will be undertaken using 52 buses, all zero-emission. Two of these will be hydrogen and the remainder electric.
According to Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll, the roll out of electric buses is an important step towards the State Government’s aim to have net zero emissions achieved by 2050. He added:
Practical data such as performance and charging and energy requirements along the various routes will be collected from the trial. This will provide an insight into the ways the buses can enhance environmental and financial sustainability.
The call to reduce emissions has been the focus of many brochure printing campaigns over the past decade.
Dandenong South-based manufacturing facility Volgren will build the majority of bodies for the electric bus trial providing an added boost to the local economy and job opportunities.

“We’re investing in greener technologies, supporting local manufacturing and providing passengers with quieter and more comfortable journeys as we drive down pollution and remove noisy diesel buses from our public network for good.”
