A new technical and further education (TAFE) skills and trades centre at Broadmeadows has seen a first for the area, with the introduction of specialised plumbing training and facilities into the curriculum.
Recently launched by Skills and Training Minister Gayle Tierney, the new $6.8 million TAFE centre is on track to help boost the number of skilled tradespeople in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
The new Kangan facility can host 3,500 students annually, and it will bring together the institute's many trades students, including 300 young plumbers, who will now be able to complete certificate courses II, III and IV in one place.
The TAFE venue has been purpose-built and provides a ‘plumbing tower’, where students will benefit from a fully simulated sewer and plumbing system, which will give them an opportunity to use their skills in a life-like situation. To assist in pipe work and commercial and domestic drainage lessons, a supersized sandpit has also been installed.
Teirney said the new centre will provide access to fabulous learning opportunities, adding:
“The centre gives students a unique real-life experience – not just through the world-class equipment they will have the chance to use, but also the highly collaborative multi-discipline learning environment.”
Flyer printing campaigns are often mounted to help spread the word about major new facilities such as the new TAFE centre, which will also provide hydraulic and pneumatics facilities, classrooms, workshops and learning spaces.
