Broadmeadows set for military parade
Members of the Australian Army are set to march on Broadmeadows.
The 4th Combat Services Support Battalion will be exercising its Freedom of Entry the City by parading through it. The tradition of granting freedom of a city to a military group originated in England and is awarded to units that have a close link with the area.
The Army has a long history with Broadmeadows, with the Maygur Barracks in operation since the First World War.
Once granted freedom, the unit may enter the city whenever it wishes, but such a large parade has not been held since the Broadmeadows Festival in 1999.
Hume City Council is encouraging residents to show their support for the Army by lining the streets during the parade, particularly as 2015 marks the centenary of the Anzac Gallipoli campaign.
Such a big event may necessitate road closures, so residents should look out for council signs advertising diversions or parking restrictions.
After the parade, there will be a number of family activities at the Civic Plaza, including a display of military vehicles and a sausage sizzle.
The parade will begin at 10.30 am this Saturday, November 21, and will start from Broadmeadows Town Park before moving along Pearcedale Parade and Tanderrum Way and finishing at the Civic Plaza by the Hume Global Learning Centre. For more details, contact Hume City Council
