Maroochydore sports fans will have the chance to see players from four AFL clubs in the coming months, as a number clubs visit for pre-season training.
The Collingwood Magpies, Hawthorn Hawks, St Kilda Saints, and the Melbourne Football Club (also known as the Demons) will all be on the Sunshine Coast between November and February next year to take part in training camps.
Each club has said it will hold some open sessions which will enable fans from Maroochydore and around the Sunshine Coast to get photographs with their favourite players and collect autographs. Keen fans might like to use banner printing to attract their idols’ attention from the stands during the training.
The Sunshine Coast Council’s Tourism, Sports and Major Events portfolio holder Councillor Jason O’Pray said the camps, which saw each club bring around 75 players and staff, provided impetus for the local economy while also encouraging youngsters to take up sport.
Fans from other parts of Australia also came to the Coast during the camps to see their team and enjoy a holiday, he said, further boosting the economy.
The events also encouraged local players, with the Sunshine Coast junior AFL team receiving increased numbers of registrations following the visits.
The training camps will take place at the Maroochydore Multi Sports Complex. More details about each club’s activities will be released in due course.
