Cool Britannia is a band that started in 2019 in Brisbane; the group comprises Mick Hughes (vocal and guitar), Dave Filmore (lead guitar), John Hamilton (drums), Lee Bond (bass guitar) and Neil-Roche-Kelly (keyboard). The influence of the band is the innovative and striking music of the 90s in Britain, the so-called Britpop years. Britpop typified songs about British topics, bringing indie rock to the forefront, as a contrast to grunge, which came mainly from the United States.
Fast Magazine writes of the band:
“Cool Britannia! A fantastic trip down memory lane! All the Britpop anthems from Oasis, The Verve, Blur, Stone Roses, The Wonder Stuff, Supergrass, Pulp and loads more! Mad for it!”
By the end of the 90s, the Britpop movement had largely dispersed, due to various disputes and bankruptcy in some quarters. Bands like Cool Britannia serve to keep the legacy alive, as there is always a great appetite for musical nostalgia.
Cool Britannia are appearing at Solbar, Maroochydore, QLD, on Friday 21st April at 7pm. Tickets cost from $37.50. Tributes to The Police and Paul Weller/The Jam will also be supporting on the night.
