“Securing major events like this demonstrates Queensland’s ability to host leading sporting festivals and showcases the State on a global stage.”
The inaugural Mooloolaba race, to be held in September, joins a further 59 events staged in 24 countries, and is expected to attract a high quality group of athletes attempting to qualify for the Ironman World Championships.
The Sunshine coast is an idyllic backdrop for the gruelling 1.9km swim, 90km cycle, and 21.1km run. The course will feature stunning ocean and hinterland views. Mark Jamieson, Sunshine Coast Regional Council Mayor, said:
“We are very proud to have won this event - it is a great addition to our ever-growing portfolio of major events being held here on the coast.”
There will be a USD$25,000 prize purse plus 40 slots for the 2013 Ironman World Championship 70.3. The event has been secured for the next three years and is expected to generate millions of dollars into the local economy, while strengthening the Sunshine Coast’s reputation as a significant Australian sporting hub.
Similar triathlon events have proved immensely popular in recent years and the Mooloolaba backdrop is certain to be a huge winner with athletes and spectators. Catalogue printing and postcard printing opportunities mean local printing companies will be eager to seize upon opportunities for the promotion of this prestigious event.
