Local characteristics to be focus of new design strategy

The development of design guidelines that help maintain and promote the distinct characteristics of the Sunshine Coast is underway with a draft strategy for public comment due later in 2019.

Referred to as the Sunshine Coast Design Strategy, the guidelines will set down how various types of design characteristics are interpreted into the feel and look of streets, buildings and landscapes in Maroochydore and throughout the Sunshine Coast.

According to Mark Jamieson, the Mayor, the strategy will provide a resource for the development industry, designers, the community and council to influence decision-making, inspire design and inform planning, taking into consideration elements of the region. He added:
“Ultimately, the Design Strategy will capture the Sunshine Coast’s special quality and provide a platform for how they are reflected throughout our communities now and into the future.”

In addition, he said the strategy aims to improve the quality of places, streets and buildings constructed so they reflect local character, respond to the climate and assist in the area becoming one of the most sustainable regions in the country.

Community consultation will be an important element of developing the strategy which will comprise an implementation and action plan, guidelines, principals and visions.

In recent years, Council has delivered a range of high quality, award-winning schemes, which are loved by members of the community including the Arts and Ecology Centre at the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens. Companies and organisations can turn to providers of Graphic Design Services to help plans become a reality.

Residents have until February 15 to complete the online survey.
