Local artists to vie for top prizes

Artists from Maroochydore and throughout the Sunshine Coast are being invited to enter the Local Artists-Local Content 2020 Art Prize.

Friends Regional Gallery Caloundra with the support of Caloundra Regional Gallery presents the prestigious art prize which has been held for the past six years. The competition, which offers $13,500 in prize money, is open to artists who reside on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

Each entry must reflect the region such as animals, people, landscape, environment, lifestyle and other areas that truly depict the Sunshine Coast and what it has to offer. Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski, who heads the Arts Portfolio, said submissions presented fascinating snapshots of work undertaken by local artists, adding:

“What’s so important is that this Art Prize and finalist exhibition encourages local artists to produce new work focussing on something they find intriguing about the Sunshine Coast. Being selected as a finalist in the prize can be an important step in developing an artist’s body of work and reputation.”

He said the competition also enabled local artists to celebrate and examine the region which has contributed to the competition becoming an important part of the local arts calendar. Events such as this can be promoted through flyer printing services.

The Art Prize will culminate in an exhibition of works from January 16 to March 1, 2020 at the Caloundra Gallery. Entries must be in by October 4, 2019 and the announcement of winners will take place on January 17, 2020.
