Light rail service to Gold Coast Airport one step closer
Planning for the extension of the Gold Coast light rail service, which currently runs from Helensvale to Broadbeach South via Southport, is progressing.
Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk, said recently that a business case for Stage 4 of the project, which involves light rail connection between Burleigh and Coolangatta Airport, is now in the planning stages.
The jointly funded studies of the City of Gold Coast and Queensland Government is set to explore east-west light rail and bus connections in an effort to provide better transit options between Robina and Nerang to the coast.
Premier Palaszczuk said the preparation of a business case is a critical step in driving forward significant transport investments such as these, adding:
According to Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate, the light rail link was of great importance strategically to New South Wales, Queensland and the Gold Coast as it would link key education, health, transport and employment nodes along a 40km distance. Such a major public transport provider could be a welcome feature for tourism brochure printing campaigns.
The Premier said a contract for the Light Rail Stage 2 project, which takes the service through to Burleigh from Broadbeach, is also due to be awarded soon.
