Work has recently begun on upgrading the sports precinct at an estimated cost of $6 million. The project will see the fields and facilities, which service the Pine Rivers Rapids Baseball and Pine Rivers Pumas Rugby Union teams, receive a welcome makeover.
According to Mayor Peter Flannery, the work has been fast-tracked to help keep local people working and to boost the region's cash flow. Moreton Bay Councillor, Mick Gillam explained that the project will provide the rugby union club with a new home. He said the current oval, which has been the main ground, will become the venue's second oval and added:
“The third oval will be converted for multi-purpose and overflow use. This includes new turf, irrigation, field lighting, as well as new roads and the construction of car parks."
In addition, a major upgrade of the baseball clubhouse will enable both sports to be accommodated in one facility. Redevelopment works will also include a new equipment shed and bullpen.
Sporting events held at venues such as the Les Hughes Sports Complex are often promoted locally using flyer printing and newsletter campaigns.
The shared facilities are expected to work well as each sport is played during different seasons.
