Plans for a new community precinct and university campus have moved a step closer to fruition with the announcement that $50.5 million has been spent on a Petrie site to host the development.
Mayor Allan Sutherland, from Moreton Bay Regional Council, described the location of the 200 hectare property which housed an old paper mill as ideal. He said that the council had only finalised the purchase recently despite plans for the development dating back two years.
Funding for the property was provided from council reserves and the Mayor said resident’s rates would not be impacted. However, he added, the benefits of locating a university in the Moreton Bay region would provide student and work opportunities for those residing in its suburbs as well as nearby towns such as North Lakes.
The purchase of the new site was considered a big step towards shaping the future development of a community precinct and proposed new university.
The Mayor said that such facilities would create more local study and job opportunities for local workers and school leavers alleviating the need to travel the often congested route south to Brisbane.
He said establishing important infrastructure in a region was important particularly in areas such as Moreton Bay where a 40% growth in population is expected in the next two decades.
Benefits would also flow through to other industries such as printing services and other commercial operations.
