Residents of North Lakes are joining together to oppose the closure of the North Lakes Resort Golf Club.
The club announced its closure and plans to sell the course due to a fall in the number of golfers, leading to a drop in income. The course and associated facilities will remain operating until the end of 2019 according to the club’s closure statement.
The owners of the club intend on selling the whole course for development as a retirement village. They have already made arrangements with The Village Retirement Group which is planning to build a 100-bed care facility and over 200 independent living units on the site.
Around 57 hectares of the land will be put aside as open space with the possibility of sport and recreational use in the future. The developers indicated that they would consider feedback from the community before submitting their plans for council approval.
Over 3,500 residents have joined the Save North Lakes Golf Course Facebook group to fight the proposed development. Among the concerns is the impact that the development will have on the environment as the golf course currently provides a wildlife corridor that is home to koalas and kangaroos and is also a vital floodway at times of heavy rain.
Many of the action group have used sign printing services to show their support.
