Residents invited to nominate unsung heroes for Australia Day Award

Residents of North Lakes, Queensland, and surrounding areas within the Moreton Bay Regional Council area have been invited to submit nominations for the 2015 Australia Day Awards.

Mayor Allan Sutherland said the search was on for unsung heroes or quiet achievers who have been committed to assisting, wherever possible, within the community over the past 12 months.

Previous Australia Day Award recipients have included community leaders, business owners, athletes and volunteers.

Last year’s Citizen of the Year was mother-of-three Tracy Watson, who raised thousands of dollars for community groups.

Cr Sutherland said it was a great opportunity to recognise some of the major contributions and hard work undertaken by local individuals for the benefit of the entire community.

He described them as the backbone of the community and was confident many residents would know someone who set themselves apart by their outstanding commitment to helping others.

Nominees would be vying for awards in seven categories, including Cultural Award, Community Event, Environmental Achievement, Young Sportsperson of the Year, Sportsperson of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Citizen of the Year.

Promotional activities such as flyer printing have been undertaken to encourage residents to put forward a nominee for the Australia Day Awards. Nomination Forms can also be downloaded from the council website.

Closing date for nominations is November 21st.
