Poets to face off on stage in North Lakes

Budding poets in North Lakes can test their skills in front of a live audience this month as the heats of the Australian Poetry Slam come to the area.

The Moreton Bay heat will be held at North Lakes library in Discovery Drive on Tuesday August 20th. A maximum of 20 people can take part and registration opens at 6.30pm, 30 minutes before the event starts.

Each competitor has two minutes to impress five judges who are selected at random from the audience.

The winner of each heat receives $100, and the winner and runner-up from each heat will win a trip to Brisbane to compete in the Queensland State Finals. The winner of the state final will receive $500 and the runner-up $100. Both will take part in the national finals where they will compete to win trips to China and Bali to visit international literary festivals.

The work performed must be original and can include spoken word, poetry, rap, and monologues. Workshops to help participants prepare for their performances will be held between 4:00pm and 6:00pm on the same day.

Poets who are inspired by the event to write more might like to think about enlisting the help of a printing company to create a small book of original poetry as a keepsake, or even for a small Print run to sell locally.

The poetry slam is free to watch and will also feature a performance by local rapper and poet Tenda McFly. For more information, visit the Moreton Bay regional council website.
