The $40m North Lakes, Queensland section of the newly opened North South Arterial Road has just been officially named.
Expounding a Royal influence, the road has been dubbed Diamond Jubilee Way to commemorate over six decades of service by Queen Elizabeth II.
Moreton Bay Councillor Julie Greer said the idea to name an important part of the local infrastructure in the Queen’s honour was first raised during the 2012 celebrations of her Diamond Jubilee.
She said at that time the North South Arterial Road was only planned. However, it is now almost five years later, and she believes it is time to transform the community’s idea into reality.
Honouring royal milestones in this way has been done before in the area, with a prime example being Coronation Drive, which Cr. Greer said commemorates King George VI coronation in 1937.
She said Signs, including those advertising street names and 23 directional Signs on the roadside, have already been altered to reflect the change.
Stretching from Boundary Road to Anzac Avenue, North Lakes, the Diamond Jubilee Way $40m development stretches 5km and was undertaken in six stages.
Greer said thousands of commuters use the roadway every day and its establishment has provided residents with quick access throughout North Lakes and nearby suburbs.
She said it also provided many benefits for visitors who travel to the area to take advantage of services, shopping and facilities.
